Manor on the Hill – COVID-19 FREE Assisted Living Community
In March, we quickly realized we had to keep our residents in the community safe. We immediately stopped vendors, providers, entertainers, and families from visiting and proving support services. This meant that the staff members had to change their roles and wear multiple hats to provide support to residents as families could no longer meet their loved one’s; we the staff became the Residents’ extended family. We reached out to families by phone to reassure and update them on the new norm. Many residents used video calling by Facetime for the first time.
We navigated the new guidelines from the CDC, we closed our dining room, and tried to keep our residents safe and active as possible. It was difficult for our residents to comprehend the seriousness of the pandemic as businesses around us shut down. For many, they did not realize the full impact of COVID 19 until they heard churches were now closed.
As advised, The National Guard came to our community and tested all our staff and residents with dignity and compassion. We hoped and prayed we were COVID Free.
As the weeks turned into months, the “Activity” team stepped up to the challenge and conducted team activities with social distancing.
In recent weeks as the COVID numbers increase in Massachusetts we keep our guard up in our personal lives. We need to be mindful of where we go and who we visit because of where we work.
Our residents have adjusted to wearing masks as the new normal. We realize during this pandemic how much our residents need their families and the staff whom they see daily are their resident family. We appreciate the support received from many families who thanked us and sent in notes of encouragement. We look forward to the New Year 2021 and putting COVID 19 in the past.
