Protecting What Matters Most: Why Estate Planning Is Essential for Families Navigating Senior Care

Learn why estate planning is essential when transitioning to assisted living or memory care. Protect your loved one with the right legal guidance.

When a loved one begins the transition into assisted living or memory care, families quickly discover that the emotional weight of the decision is matched by its legal and financial complexity. Questions arise that most families have never had to face before: Who has the authority to make medical decisions? What happens to the house? Is there a will — and is it up to date? Who is responsible for managing finances if our loved one can no longer do so themselves?

These are not questions to figure out in the middle of a crisis. They are questions that deserve thoughtful answers — and the guidance of an experienced attorney. At Manor on the Hill, a family-owned assisted living and memory care community in Leominster, MA, we've partnered with Gelinas & Ward LLP, a trusted local law firm also based in Leominster, to help families navigate the legal side of elder care planning with confidence.

Estate planning is not just for the wealthy.
It is for anyone who loves someone and wants to protect them.

What Is Estate Planning — and Why Does It Matter for Senior Care?

Estate planning is the process of organizing your legal and financial affairs so that your wishes are clearly documented and legally enforceable — both during your lifetime and after. For families with a loved one entering assisted living or memory care, estate planning takes on particular urgency. Without the right documents in place, families can find themselves unable to act on behalf of a loved one when it matters most.

A comprehensive estate plan for a senior typically includes:

A Last Will and Testament — documenting how assets should be distributed after death

A Durable Power of Attorney — authorizing a trusted person to manage financial affairs if your loved one becomes incapacitated

A Health Care Proxy — designating someone to make medical decisions when your loved one cannot

A Revocable Living Trust — in some cases, a trust can help avoid probate and streamline the transfer of assets

Beneficiary designations — ensuring bank accounts, retirement funds, and life insurance policies reflect current wishes

Having the right legal documents in place is one of the greatest gifts a family can give each other.

Why You Need an Attorney — Not Just a Template

In the age of online legal forms, it can be tempting to download a will or power of attorney template and call it done. But elder law is one of the most nuanced areas of legal practice, and small mistakes in these documents can have enormous consequences. An improperly drafted power of attorney may be rejected by a bank. A will that doesn't meet Massachusetts execution requirements may be contested or deemed invalid. A trust without proper funding is essentially useless.

An experienced elder law attorney brings far more than document preparation to the table. They bring:

Deep knowledge of Massachusetts-specific laws governing estates, guardianship, and health care decision-making

The ability to identify gaps and risks in your family's current plan

Guidance on structuring assets in ways that serve your family's long-term interests

Clear explanations of complex legal concepts in plain language

A relationship built on trust — someone your family can return to as circumstances change

This is especially important when memory loss or cognitive decline is involved. There are specific legal and ethical considerations around capacity — meaning the ability of a person to understand and consent to legal decisions — and an attorney who understands elder law will navigate these sensitively and correctly.

           Common Legal Situations Families Face

Every family is different, but some situations come up again and again when a loved one enters senior care. Here are a few where legal guidance is particularly important:

When There Is No Power of Attorney

If a loved one becomes incapacitated without a durable power of attorney in place, family members may have no legal authority to manage their finances, pay bills, or make care decisions. In these cases, the family may need to petition the court for guardianship or conservatorship — a costly, time-consuming process that could have been avoided with early planning.

When the Family Home Is Involved

The family home is often a senior's largest asset, and decisions about it — whether to sell, transfer, or retain it — carry significant legal and financial implications. An attorney can help families understand the proper way to handle real estate as part of the broader estate plan.

           When Family Members Disagree

Blended families, estranged relationships, and differing opinions about care can create conflict at an already emotional time. A clearly documented estate plan — drafted and witnessed by an attorney — removes ambiguity and gives the family a legally sound foundation to work from, even when emotions run high.

When a Loved One Has a Memory Care Diagnosis

A diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia creates particular urgency around legal planning. Documents like a power of attorney and health care proxy must be executed while the person still has legal capacity. Waiting too long can eliminate the option entirely. An elder law attorney can assess the situation and help families act quickly and appropriately.

The time to plan is while your loved one can still participate in the conversation. Don't wait for a crisis to bring you to the table.

Toddlers and Centurions – Intergenerational Activities

They say “It takes a village to raise a child”; Knowledge, wisdom, and unconditional love by seniors have a lasting effect on children. Children can also bring happiness and smiles to seniors. We can reminisce about the past when extended families lived close together on the same street or in the same town and interacted frequently.

Manor on the Hill (pre-pandemic) had a “Adopt a Grandparent Program” where preschool children came every month to do activities with the residents. This was the most popular activity for both generations.

Meaningful activities between seniors and children can be fun and educational.

Here are examples of things that the seniors can talk about bringing back nostalgic memories and educating the children at the same time:

Tin of Spam: Most children will have no idea what it is however seniors will have memories of tinned meat that could be transported and stored without refrigeration.

Rotary phone: Dialing numbers one-by-one, one mistake or busy line and had to start all over again

Payphones and a dime in their penny-loafers to call home. Many may have used their dime for a treat at the corner store.

For Valentine’s Day Lali and Neeva, made Valentine cards for all the residents which brought joy to everyone’s day. Under normal circumstances, Lali and Neeva would have baked cupcakes and cookies with the residents but it had to be done virtually this year.

ife gets back to normal here are few examples of fun activities we plan to revive/resurrect:

            Puzzles and Games

            Reading Together

            Gardening

            Tablet or Smartphone Play

            Lunch Date

These activities bring joy to both the residents and the children. Elderly residents find that the interaction with the youngsters comes without judgment and gives them something to look forward to. Having these socially interactive activities are motivating to the residents because like the children they get undivided attention, singing songs, sharing & hearing stories, doing art projects, and much more.

Sundowning

Sundowning is a neurological phenomenon associated with increased confusion and restlessness most commonly associated with Alzheimer’s disease, but also found in those with other forms of dementia. The term “sundowning” was coined due to the timing of the patient’s confusion as it typically occurs late in the day or early evening as the sun is setting. The symptoms may include increased confusion, anxiety, aggression, agitation and ignoring directions. Sundowning seems to occur more frequently during the middle stages of Alzheimer’s disease and mixed dementia and subsides with the progression of a patient’s dementia.

Here are some useful tips to deal with sundowning behavior:

Close blinds and drapes so that the decreasing light outdoors is not easily seen.

Brighten the interior environment with increased lighting being careful to keep the room free from shadows. Dementia sufferers may mistake a shadow for a hole to avoid increasing the risk of falls as they move away to avoid what they believe is a danger.

Create a calm environment. Turn off the TV and put soothing music on. Be sure the music is era appropriate; Sinatra not Madonna.

Limit day time napping. While the cause of sundowning is not completely understood, it is known to be a disturbance of the internal clock. Keeping to a set sleep schedule with limited napping is known to help.

Be patient and distract with an enjoyable activity. View a favorite photo album, brush hair, water indoor plants. Find a calm, soothing activity the senior enjoys and be patient sharing the activity with them.

Here at Manor on the Hill, we incorporate these tips into our evenings to help our Residents who suffer from sundowning helping them get to their bedtime routine and sleep.

Risks for Alzheimer’s

Risk factors have been identified to assess your risk of developing Alzheimer’s. Some are uncontrollable, such as age, while others can be influenced by your choices.

           Uncontrollable Factors:

           Age –

is the greatest known factor for Alzheimer’s. One out of three people who are 85 or older have the disease.

           Family History

            – is another strong risk factor. Those who have a parent or sibling with the disease is at a higher risk of contracting Alzheimer’s.

           Genetics

            – Science has identified several risk genes and deterministic genes that influence the odds of developing Alzheimer’s. Risk genes increase the likelihood of developing the disease but do not guarantee that the person with the risk gene will indeed develop the disease. The gene with the strongest link to the disease is apolipoprotein E-e4 (APOE-e4); those who have this gene have a one in four chance of developing Alzheimer’s.

A deterministic gene is a gene that directly causes the disease. Those who have a deterministic gene will develop Alzheimer’s. Science has so far found three deterministic genes that lead to Alzheimer’s – amyloid precursor protein (APP), presenilin-1 (PS-1) and presenilin-2 (PS-2).

           Controllable Factors:

Recent research has found links of risk factors we can control through our general lifestyle and wellness choices.

           Head Trauma

            – research has shown a strong link between serious head injuries and further risk of Alzheimer’s.

           Healthy Heart

            – there is growing evidence of a link between heart health and brain health. Those who suffer from high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and high cholesterol have a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s.

           Ethnicity

            – because Latinos and African Americans have higher rates of vascular disease (see above), they may also be at a higher risk for Alzheimer’s.

           Healthy Aging

            – overall healthy aging may also keep your brain fit. Keep your weight within recommended guidelines, avoid tobacco and excessive alcohol use, be socially involved and exercise your brain and your body.

Communicating with a Person with Alzheimer’s or other Dementia

The other day as I was walking through our Memory Care Lane, the memory care wing at our Assisted Living Community in Leominster, MA, I was able to observe the quality care and compassion one of our CNAs was providing one of the seniors living with us. The Resident, whom I will call Nancy (not her real name due to HIPPA) was being attended to by one of our long-tenured aides (whom will refer to as Lisa) who had specialized training in Alzheimer’s Care. Lisa’s approach to Nancy demonstrated several key practices in communicating with a senior citizen with Alzheimer’s or Dementia which I thought would be useful to share.

Lisa had approached Nancy from the front, introducing herself, probably for the thousandth time. As Nancy was seated, Lisa got down on her level maintaining eye contact the entire time. Lisa placed a hand on Nancy’s forearm to give her physical comfort. Keep in mind that if the senior is irritated by touch, to avoid this, but be sure to practice the other approach keys – approach from the front, introduce yourself by name, be on the same level and maintain eye contact.

Lisa called Nancy by name to help orient her and to gain her attention and focus. Lisa used a lower pitch as it is more calming. She spoke slowly asking Nancy one question at a time in short sentences with simple words so as not to overwhelm Nancy.

When Nancy didn’t respond immediately, she patiently waited as Alzheimer suffers often need more time to process. When Nancy didn’t respond, Lisa repeated the question using the same words rather than changing words which can lead to more confusion and agitation.

Rather than asking Lisa questions, she turned the question into an answer, providing a solution. As it was close to lunch time, rather than saying “Are you hungry?”, Lisa said “The Dining Room is around the corner. Let me take you there.”

To get Nancy ready for the walk to the Dining Room, Lisa placed Nancy’s hand on her walker, providing a visual cue on what Lisa would like her to do. Nancy understood this cue and stood up, allowing Lisa to escort her to her meal.

During this entire encounter, Lisa avoided quizzing her, peppering her with questions or asking her questions such as, “Do you remember what you wanted?”. Asking a person with dementia to remember only adds to their frustration. Throughout Lisa presented an easygoing manner with a gentle, kind tone of voice supported by friendly facial expressions. Most importantly, Lisa treated Nancy with dignity and respect.

I was so proud of Lisa that I gave her a Manor Moment, a program of recognition for these numerous special moments at Manor on the Hill.

Please look for more useful information each week. Thanks for reading.

When is it time to consider Assisted Living?

We often have family visit us here at Manor on the Hill and can see immediately in their eyes the stress of caring for an elderly parent. Moving Mom or Dad from their long-time home can be unsettling, however, making that move is often in their best interest. 30 days after moving in, we see Residents gaining weight since they are being served three nutritious meals a day and their mood improves as they socialize with others in their new home.

Other than the stress caring for a senior presents, what are some other signs it may be time to consider Assisted Living?

            Housework is being neglected

The senior doesn’t bathe regularly, often as they worried about safety in the tub or shower

Laundry isn’t being done and the same clothes are being worn day-after-day

            Bills aren’t being paid timely

Medical care is needed more frequently, often with hospitalization

Your loved one feels isolated and bored, often leading to depression

            Difficulty managing their medication

            Increased falls and other accidents

            Memory loss and forgotten appointments

            Increased aggressive behavior

The generation your Mom and Dad belongs too often views an Assisted Living Community with their image of a Nursing Home from the 60s or 70s. This isn’t accurate as Nursing Homes are very different from that image and Assisted Living Communities are a relatively new concept. Assisted Living should be thought of as being comprised of three parts – real estate, hospitality and care.

The real estate is the apartment they rent, as well as the enjoyment of the communal living spaces such as the dining room, library, activity room, community kitchen and grounds. The hospitality consists of dining, activities, entertainment and trips to area stores, restaurants and cultural attractions. And the care component is assistance with the six Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) – bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, mobility and eating.

After a family makes the decision to move Mom or Dad to Manor on the Hill, we often hear within the first month, “I wish I had done this sooner”. Call for a visit to see how we can help you and your senior parent.

"Proper footwear is an important defense against the risk of falling"

One major consequence of growing older is the increased likelihood of falling. One of four people over age 65 falls each year. Falling once doubles your chance of falling again. Understanding the causes and implementing easy interventions, in conjunction with your medical team and family, can reduce or eliminate the risk of falling. Doing so important for the elderly as the impact of falling is significant:

One of five falls will cause a serious injury

8 million older people are treated in an emergency room annually for injuries related to falls.

More than 800,000 are hospitalized each year after a fall

At least 300,000 of the hospitalizations are for fractured hips

The direct medical costs for fall injuries are $31 billion annually.

Because of the impact on the quality of life of seniors after a fall, and the financial costs, a lot of research has been done to identify risk factors and what can be done to prevent falls.

           Risk factors include:

            Lower body weakness

Use of medicines, particularly sedatives, tranquilizers and antidepressants

            Vision issues

            Balance difficulties

            Vitamin D deficiency

            Home hazards

            Foot pain or improper footwear

While all falls cannot be prevented, simple steps can go a long way to minimize the chances of falling. These include:

            Visit your doctor.

Discuss with him or her a list of your medications, both prescribed and over-the-counter. Your doctor can review your medications for side effects and interactions that may increase your chance of falling. Also tell your doctor about how comfortable you are when you walk – do you grab items such as chairs to steady yourself; do you feel dizzy when standing or walking; do you suffer joint pain or a shortness of breath; do you have numbness in your lower extremities. These will help your physician evaluate your risk for falling.

            Exercise.

Do exercises that make your legs stronger and your balance better. Exercise need not be strenuous, just done on a consistent basis, in order for you to see improvement. Tai chi is a good exercise for seniors.

            Have your Eyes Checked.

Do this at least once a year. Update your eyewear as needed. Consider ditching those bifocals and have dedicated glasses for reading and another pair for distance.

            Wear the Right Shoe.

Wear properly fitting, sturdy shows with nonskid soles. If you wear slippers around the house, these too should have nonskid soles and should not be loose but snug.

            Look around your home.

Remove throw rugs and clutter. Move coffee tables, magazine stands and plants from high traffic areas. Make sure handrails, floorboards and steps are secure. Add a second handrail on the stairs so there is one on both sides for your use. Use non-skid floor wax. Store items you use a lot, especially in the kitchen, at an easy to reach level. Add grab bars in the bathroom and grab handles at the front door. Keep your tub free of soap build up and install no-slip strips in the bath or shower.

             Light it up.

Keep your home brightly lit to avoid tripping on hard-to-see items. Turn on the light before going up or down stairs or through a room. Trade out the light switch for a glow-in-the-dark switch. Place nightlights in hallways, bedrooms, bathrooms and stairways. Keep lighting uniform in each room and add lighting to dark areas.

            Use a cane or walker.

And if you do, use it all the time, even for a short walk across a room.

At Manor on the Hill, we conduct a fall risk assessment regularly with our Residents and partner with health providers to implement these suggestions, as well as, to engage in our Residents in Physical or Occupational Therapy as needed. A little planning can help prevent falls and keep you from becoming a statistic.

Memory loss that disrupts daily life may be a symptom of Alzheimer’s or other dementia. Alzheimer’s is a brain disease that causes a slow decline in memory, thinking and reasoning skills. There are 10 warning signs and symptoms. If you notice any of them, don’t ignore them. Schedule an appointment with your doctor.

           1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life

One of the most common signs of Alzheimer’s disease, especially in the early stage, is forgetting recently learned information. Others include forgetting important dates or events, asking for the same information over and over, and increasingly needing to rely on memory aids (e.g., reminder notes or electronic devices) or family members for things they used to handle on their own.

           What’s a typical age-related change?

Sometimes forgetting names or appointments, but remembering them later.

           2. Challenges in planning or solving problems

Some people may experience changes in their ability to develop and follow a plan or work with numbers. They may have trouble following a familiar recipe or keeping track of monthly bills. They may have difficulty concentrating and take much longer to do things than they did before.

People with Alzheimer’s often find it hard to complete daily tasks. Sometimes, people may have trouble driving to a familiar location, managing a budget at work or remembering the rules of a favorite game.

People with Alzheimer’s can lose track of dates, seasons and the passage of time. They may have trouble understanding something if it is not happening immediately. Sometimes they may forget where they are or how they got there.

For some people, having vision problems is a sign of Alzheimer’s. They may have difficulty reading, judging distance and determining color or contrast, which may cause problems with driving.

People with Alzheimer’s may have trouble following or joining a conversation. They may stop in the middle of a conversation and have no idea how to continue or they may repeat themselves. They may struggle with vocabulary, have problems finding the right word or call things by the wrong name (e.g., calling a “watch” a “hand-clock”).

A person with Alzheimer’s disease may put things in unusual places. They may lose things and be unable to go back over their steps to find them again. Sometimes, they may accuse others of stealing. This may occur more frequently over time.

A person with Alzheimer’s may start to remove themselves from hobbies, social activities, work projects or sports. They may have trouble keeping up with a favorite sports team or remembering how to complete a favorite hobby. They also may avoid being social because of the changes they have experienced.

Leominster – Wiles celebrated her 100th birthday among family and friends Tuesday at Manor on the Hill, where she currently resides. She is now the second resident currently living in that community to reach centenarian status and, as her family explained, she remains one of the most lively people living there.

As she got ready to officially complete the first century of her life, Eunice Wiles joked that she was a little surprised to be having such a milestone birthday.

“It’s just another birthday for me, but they just keep piling up,” she said.

Wiles’ son, Rick, said his mother was born in Brooklyn and lived most of her life in New York state. She and her late husband raised their two children in Kingston, New York, and relocated briefly to Florida before she moved to Massachusetts to be closer to her son after her husband’s death.

“She’s always been a hard worker and she’s very devoted to whatever task is at hand. And she’s a very smart person,” Rick Wiles said. “She’s also a very dedicated friend. People she knows have always said that if she’s your friend, she’s your friend for life.”

Manor on the Hill Activities Director Patrick Long said Wiles had made great strides since moving to the community in 2015, noting that she had originally been a part of their Memory Care program for Alzheimer’s and dementia residents, but no longer is.

Managing Caregiver Stress

All too often I will be sitting with a Caregiver who is inquiring about our services at Manor on the Hill and I will comment, “you’re at your wits end, aren’t you?” The stress of caregiving is apparent in their face and eyes.

Caregiving can be rewarding but it can also be very stressful as the elderly parent continues to decline or require more and more assistance. Being there when a loved one needs you is a common core value shared by many and is something you wish to provide. However, it is natural to feel angry, frustrated, exhausted or sad.

As a caregiver, you may become so focused on your loved one, that you let your own health and well-being suffer. Some signs of caregiver stress are:

            Feeling overwhelmed or worrying constantly

Being tired most of the time

Sleeping too much or too little

Changes in weight, gaining or losing weight rapidly

            Being easily irritated or angry

            Feeling sad

Having frequent headaches, aches and pains or other physical problems

            Abusing alcohol or drugs

Too much stress, over time, can severely impact your health. In fact, depression is 2.3 times more likely in a caregiver who hides their emotions.

To help manage the stress of caregiving, consider:

            Accepting help.

It’s ok to admit you can’t do it all yourself. Accept help from others; it’s ok.

Focus on what you can provide.

There is no “perfect” caregiver. Provide what you can and accept you can’t provide everything as long as your loved one is safe and medically taken care of.

            Set realistic goals.

Again, you can’t do it all. Prioritize, make lists and establish a daily routine.

            Join a support group.

We have a monthly support group at Manor on the Hill on the third Wednesday of each month at 1:30 pm. Anyone can attend.

            Seek social support.

Stay well-connected with family and friends. Make time for yourself to be with others in a social situation at least once a week.

            Take care of your health.

Set a sleep routine, exercise regularly, eat healthy and drink plenty of water.

            See your Doctor

and be sure to tell them that you are a caregiver.

Even caregivers deserve some vacation time. We offer a “Respite Stay” for your loved one so that you can decompress, relax and get ready to care-give once again. Or you might consider making the Manor on the Hill your loved ones new home so our professional caregivers can provide the services necessary and all you have to do is visit!

Toiletries in the Presence of those with Dementia

“A safe bathroom in Manor on the Hill’s Memory Care Lane”

Often overlooked in the bathrooms of those suffering from Dementia are seemingly innocent products that are potentially hazardous if ingested or used incorrectly, especially around the eyes. Unfortunately, those with dementia may not realize what they are using or may use it incorrectly, resulting in discomfort, or hospitalization.

Do you know what may cause stomach pain and possible intestinal blockage if a large amount is accidentally swallowed? Toothpaste! If it’s a fluoride toothpaste, swallowing large amounts may cause convulsions, diarrhea, heart attack, shock, tremors and weakness. It’s something we all use regularly and is often found on the counter of a home where a dementia sufferer resides without a second thought. But it’s potentially hazardous.

Topical lotions, shampoo, deodorant, shaving cream, cologne or perfume, skin barriers, aftershave, hair spray, mouthwash, nail polish and powder all carry a risk if accidentally swallowed or through improper use.

Look at the back of all products in the bathroom and see what the risks are. If there is a notation to call Poison Control if swallowed, it certainly needs to be locked away. It’s better to lock away these items and bring them out only when the dementia sufferer is using them and is supervised than suffer the guilt that will surely be there if harm befalls your loved one.

           – According to a Boston University study, bright red tableware increases food intake by 24% in those with Alzheimer’s/ Dementia. This article is an interesting read. It’s well known that color can impact the way we feel. Interior designers have use color to invoke feelings of warmth, happiness, lightness, comfort. It’s no wonder color can affect our appetites too!

Healthy Diet May Help Shield the Aging Brain

I thought this was a great article on a recent study about diet and brain function. I believe it reinforces the importance of eating healthy to maintain all functions of body and mind:

(HealthDay News) – Older adults who ate better maintained problem-solving and planning skills, study finds.

Eating a healthier diet might reduce the risk of problems with certain brain functions as you age, findings from a recent study suggest.

Older adults with healthier diets reduced their odds of impaired “executive function” by 35 percent. Executive function refers to a collection of things done by the brain, including memory, reasoning, multi-tasking, problem-solving and planning skills.

“Healthy diet might affect cognition [thinking skills] through several mechanisms,” said study co-author Carol Derby, associate professor of neurology and of epidemiology and population health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City.

“Healthy diet is associated with reduced rates of cardiovascular disease, with more healthy weight and with reduced risk of diabetes, all of which are risk factors for cognitive decline and dementia,” she explained.

However, this study wasn’t designed to show that eating more healthfully actually caused the better brain function, or that a good diet could prevent Alzheimer’s or dementia. The study was only designed to find an association between a healthy diet and better brain function.

A Guide For New Residents & Families

You have made the decision to move into an assisted living residence. Yet you still have many questions. Do I really need the help? Will I make new friends? Will I receive help when I need it? Will I continue to see my family and friends? While all these questions are common, the answer to all of them is the same— Yes! You can make new friends, you can receive the personal assistance you need, and you can continue to see your family and friends. Change can be challenging. The time it takes to transition is different for everyone. The keys to success are preparation, a positive attitude, a supportive network of family and friends, along with patience and understanding—all will prepare you for a smooth transition.

           Privacy Concerns

One of the biggest differences between living in your own home and assisted living is the number of people under one roof. You will have the opportunity to be around your contemporaries and make new friends. However, that doesn’t mean you will lose your privacy. Your apartment is your space. Friends and family can visit you, but you determine when. You may want to request a key to your apartment for added privacy and security.

What To Bring To Your New Home

Soon after selecting a facility, residents say to begin planning for your move, including deciding which personal items such as furniture, keepsakes, and photographs to move.

Based upon their personal experiences, many residents suggest you see the actual apartment or unit that you will move into and take measurements. Ask the administrator or director what furniture, if any, the residence will provide. Some residences may provide minimal furniture, such as a bed or chair upon request; other residences encourage you to bring whatever furnishings will make you feel comfortable in your new home. Experience indicates that making choices about personal possessions is difficult at the time; however, one resident said, “It’s not as bad as you think . . . Try to remain positive and have family and friends help you.”

Residents suggest that you might want to leave large pieces of furniture at home, since your apartment will probably be smaller than your current home. They also 1201 L St., NW 202-842-4444 Making A Successful Transition Washington, DC 20005 2 suggest that you bring smaller prized possessions to create that “at-home” feeling in your new assisted living apartment. And, for those possessions that you can’t part with but aren’t sure that you want to bring with you, consider putting those items in a storage unit or asking family to temporarily store the items for you. This way you will have time to determine which items are important to have with you at your new home.

You should start packing well in advance of the actual move. Sort through your clothes and decide what you will need and how much your new closets will hold. Residents advise to be sure to look at available closet and storage space to avoid bringing more than the closets can hold. Avoid bringing too many of one thing such as coats.

           Moving Day Helpers

When moving day arrives and you are ready to set up your new home, ask family and friends to help arrange and organize your apartment. Many assisted living residences have staff members who can help move your furniture and other heavy pieces into your new apartment. You will want to find out what assistance the residence offers before you arrive on moving day. Although staff, family members, and friends are there to help you, it is important that you decide how your apartment is arranged. Remember, arranging your apartment to suit your preferences will make your adjustment easier.

Also known as Hallowe’en, a contraction of “All Hallows’ Evening“, also known as All halloween or All Hallows’ Eve or All Saints’ Eve is a yearly celebration observed in a number of countries on October 31, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day. It initiates the triduum of Allhallo tide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed believers. Within Allhallowtide, the traditional focus of All Hallows’ Eve revolves around the theme of using “humor and ridicule to confront the power of death.”

According to many academic scholars, All Hallows’ Eve is a Christianized feast initially influenced by Celtic harvest festivals with possible pagan roots, particularly the Gaelic Samhain. Other academic scholars maintain that it originated independently of Samhain and has solely Christian roots.

Typical festive Halloween activities include trick-or-treating (or the related “guising”), attending costume parties, decorating, carving pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted house attractions, playing pranks, telling scary stories, and watching horror films. In many parts of the world, the Christian religious observances of All Hallows’ Eve, including attending church services and lighting candles on the graves of the dead, remain popular, although in other locations, these solemn customs are less pronounced in favor of a more commercialized and secularized celebration. Because many Western Christian denominations encourage, although no longer require, abstinence from meat on All Hallows’ Eve, the tradition of eating certain vegetarian foods for this vigil day developed, including the consumption of apples, colcannon, cider, potato pancakes, and soul cakes.

District Governor Doug Detweiler made it a special point to come to our Club to honor and recognize Past President Bharti Desai Bhakta for all that she does for International Service and for the RI Foundation. Bharti is the District “Wiz Kid” when it comes to applying for Matching Grants. She often helps other clubs to better understand the process in applying for grants. Bharti is a RI Major Donor.
